Once a Draconic Shard is defeated in combat, it will more than likely return. Through its Commanding Thought legendary action, a Gem Shard is capable of controlling the movement and actions of another creature unless it's capable of succeeding a DC 20 Wisdom save. While its damage output and incredible 80-foot flying speed should not be taken lightly, this is just the tip of the iceberg. When in combat, these spectral Dragons are quite dangerous, boasting a CR of 17 and the ability to deal severe psychic damage, stunning a target in the process. It's said that some Draconic Shards take on the guise of sentient magic items, aiming to manipulate adventurers to do their bidding. Though they can produce spectral forms that appear as incorporeal versions of their original bodies, these undead Gem Dragon retain their mind in its entirety and often still aim to carry out their original ambitions. When an extraordinarily powerful Gem Dragon dies, its consciousness may refuse to pass on with its body, causing the Dragon's soul to attach itself to an object such as a crystal or an item from its hoard.
